Love, Obedience and the Nature of God [Westminster Shorter Catechism, Q40-43]

Love, Obedience and the Nature of God

Love, Obedience and the Nature of God, “What do these things have to do with one another?” you may ask. The answer is that they are actually inseparable! In our study of the Christian life as we see it taught in the Catechism we find that the Westminster Divines, thought and taught clearly and biblically as they put it together. The questions and answers that we have been studying for the last few weeks are these;

Q. 40. What did God at first reveal to man for the rule of his obedience?
A. The rule which God at first revealed to man for his obedience, was the moral law.

Q. 41. Wherein is the moral law summarily comprehended?
A. The moral law is summarily comprehended in the ten commandments.

Q. 42. What is the sum of the ten commandments?
A. The sum of the ten commandments is, to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength, and with all our mind; and our neighbor as ourselves.

Q. 43. What is the preface to the ten commandments?
A. The preface to the ten commandments is in these words, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

Q. 44. What does the preface to the ten commandments teach us?
A. The preface to the ten commandments teaches us, that because God is the Lord, and our God, and Redeemer, therefore we are bound to keep all his commandments.

Thomas Boston, an English Puritan of the late 17th Century has expounded these teachings in his work An Illustration of the Doctrines of the Christian Religion, With Respect to Faith and Practice.  We have also looked at one of his contemporaries, Thomas Watson in his, Body of Divinity, The Ten Commandments (for this part of the Catechism) and The Lord’s Prayer, Which all cover the Catechism according to its divisions of subject matter. These are priceless gems when it comes to grounding ourselves in the foundational teachings of the Christian Faith.
