“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Is this a set of three different commands or one way for those who He has redeemed to respond to God because of His goodness? I would argue that it is the later. The joy of our salvation should flow over in our communication with Him. Thanks is the proper response of our hearts as we understand the profound blessing of being redeemed, the natural expression of one receiving the ultimate benefit from God, forgiveness and and eternal life.
John Calvin says of this passage
is self-control, when the mind keeps itself in calmness under
adversity, and does not give indulgence to grief. And so I connect
these three things together
