Christ’s Return, why did He tell us, “No one knows the day or the hour?”

I made it through the section of 1 Thessalonians that deals with the return of Christ and I am so very glad that I had the opportunity to preach through it. This was the one area where I knew that my theology differed from many in the church. However the view that I hold regarding these things is by no means new or novel. It is expressly stated by Christians from very early times, Christians such as Athanasius, Augustine, Calvin, The Westminster Divines and many, many more. By the providence of God I came across a number of modern guys that hold it as well, including; D.A.Carson, Michael Horton, Alistair Begg, and less known but equally gifted men like Cornel Venema and Kim Riddlebarger

There is a lot to the subject of Christ’s Return; Rapture, Resurrection, Return, Final Judgment, the State of the World When He Comes, the Eternal State.  I don’t intend to take it all in in this post. I do challenge those who hold to the contemporary status quo of Dispensational Premillennialism.  History and the theology of the Church witness against those modern interpretations of these things.

Questions are answered that make an Idealist Amillennial understanding of books like Revelation and parts of 1 and 2 Thessalonians far more practical and applicable than you may be used to.
Questions like;

  • What and when is the “Tribulation?” (Matthew 24)
  • What and when is the “First Resurrection” and how does that effect me now? (Revelation 20)
  • What are the signs of Christ’s Return? (Matthew 24, 2 Thessalonians, 2 Peter 3)
  • Should I be looking at the evening news to try to figure this stuff out?
  • What should my response to all of this be as I live my life for Jesus Christ today?

The message that I preached on May 2 covers all of this including the question posed in the title of this entry, “Why did Christ tell us, “No one knows the day or the hour?” Even more is made clear in conjunction with the two prior messages. I challenge you to listen and to investigate some of the resources above, particularly Kim Riddlebargers lectures Amillennialism 101 and His series on Revelation that are in MP3 format on his blog.
Give the messages a listen and let’s dialogue on this one!
