Glory in This!

Living in a culture that has forgotten its God and being commanded to
take the knowledge of God to them….

You thought I was talking about us, didn’t you?  That is where Jeremiah was in
about 600 BC and that is where we as Christians are at in 21st century
America. What is it about God that we need to communicate to our
culture? Is it really much different than Jeremiah’s message? As we
examine Jeremiah 9:23-24 we will see that as God does
not change, neither does fallen man and neither does our message.

In Judah in the time of Jeremiah, spirituality was high, but the God of their fathers was not much a part of it. Men, though they were religious, had forgotten the true and living God and substituted cheap imitations in order to feel comfortable in their selfish and sinful lifestyles. They heaped to themselves teachers who would tell them what they wanted to hear and wallowed in self-esteem and selfish desires.  At that point, God had had enough and was sending judgment and now they even thought that they were stronger than God and could deliver themselves from His hand.

What a mess! In the midst of this Jeremiah called them back to trusting and putting themselves under the authority (including the chastisement) of God. God told them that their wisdom, might and riches were no match for Him and that their best bet was to understand and know Him. This was a call to radical humiliation. It that the message that we preach to the culture that we are a part of? That is God’s message to Judah and that is Paul’s message to the Corinthians.

Jeremiah
9:23

Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,
Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory
in his riches; (24) But let him who glories

glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the LORD,
exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth.
For in these I delight,” says the LORD.

I pray that as you listen to this message that your glorying will be set in the right place!
