What is Faith?

On May 31 I had the privilege of preaching at Vanderbilt Community Church as pulpit fill. It is a very nice little church about 45 minutes south of the Mackinac Bridge. We had the best hospitality imaginable as we stayed with a family from the church on Saturday night.

My text for that Sunday was Hebrews 10:38 -11:2 where the writer of the letter to the Hebrews is encouraging his audience during trying times
and he shows them that faith has always been what held God’s people in
place. After much comparing of Jesus to the Old Covenant he encourages
them to trust God as those of old had trusted Him and all the more
since they had the fulfillment of promises that the former generations
never saw. Jesus is the fulfillment of the promises of God given to those ancient fathers. The history of God’s faithfulness and His bringing to pass
all that He had formerly promised is a great ground of hope for the
Believer. Living in faith and looking forward in hope requires a
looking back at God’s faithfulness.

Therefore “faith is the substance of things hoped for” as we read in Hebrews 11:1. Faith is a foundation for what we expect God to do (hope). This is what the word substance refers to in our text. That foundation has to be more than just a bare trust in our trusting. It is indeed based on God’s faithfulness and so in that is a sure foundation on which all that we expect from God should be firmly set.

It is “evidence of things not seen.” The word evidence here is the result of a test, a proof that though we may not see God’s promise fulfilled as of yet it is only a matter of time because we have seen His word faithfully come to pass. Our faith is then an evidence again of God’s faithfulness and the sureness of the promise that He has given.

And so it seems that our faith is evidence for God’s existence. God demonstrates Himself by our faith as His Word comes to pass. Is your faith showing others that God is faithful?

I pray that as you listen to the message that your faith is strengthened and God is proven faithful, to His glory!
