The Good Shepherd and the Bad Shepherds

John 10:1-21 is this week’s text and it continues with Jesus getting in the face of the Pharisees. It seems that He is not afraid to state boldly what needs to be said to those who carry the weight of responsibility for the leadership of God’s people. As we closed out John 9 last time we saw that Jesus accused them of spiritual blindness. As we enter into John 10 the confrontation escalates to Jesus calling them thieves and robbers as well as hirelings who do not care for the flock.

Jesus says many important things in this passage and some of them we will have to look at next time. Today, we look at His contrast between the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep and those worthless shepherds who are only in it for personal gain. Here we have a good body of information from which to judge the faithfulness of a shepherd. We also have the fulfillment of prophesies from Ezekiel 34, Zechariah 11 and other places where God tells Israel that He will remove the hirelings, those worthless shepherds, from His Flock and take the responsibility upon Himself. All of these things point to the guilt of the Scribes and Pharisees and I am sure increase their anger toward the Lord.

When it is all said and done there is a division among those who hear it and some say, “He has a demon. Why do you listen to Him?” and others say, “Men with demons don’t speak like this or open the eyes of the blind.”  Jesus often says things that challenge us in our comfort and hopefully make us examine ourselves. If you are a ministry leader or pastor can you hear the words of Jesus here and say “Amen” or do they agitate you? As a sheep in God’s sheepfold, a believer in Christ, are you focused on encouraging the other sheep or just content to get what you can from your shepherd?

I pray that as you listen that you are able to hear the Shepherd’s heart and that it motivates you to emulate it to the rest of the Flock.
